Short Course: Visualising Fires in Spain through Sentinel-3 data
Start Date:
Nov. 25, 2025
Region:
Europe
Description:
During the summer of 2025, Spain has once again faced an intense wildfire season, highlighting the urgent need for accurate and timely monitoring of fire activity. This 1.5-hour training provides a concise introduction to how EUMETSAT data and tools can be used to visualise and analyse fire events across Spain and Europe.
The session will begin with a brief background on fires in Europe in 2025, setting the scene by exploring the environmental context and the role of satellite Earth Observation in detecting and tracking wildfires. Participants will then watch a guided demonstration of how to download fire-related datasets using the EUMETSAT Data Store graphical interface (DS GUI), showing how to access the most relevant satellite products.
The webinar will continue with an explanation and live demonstration of EUMDAC, the command-line interface for automated data access, followed by a walkthrough of a Jupyter Notebook that illustrates how these datasets can be processed and visualised. A real wildfire use case will drive the entire session, ensuring continuity as the same dataset is explored across different tools, from initial data discovery to final visualisation.
The Data products utilised in this course will be: S3 NRT AOD and S3 NRT FRP.
Participants will receive an email with links to Data Access video tutorials and key resources to revisit the demonstrations and deepen their understanding after the course.
