Description:
This course aims to introduce fundamental concepts of hydrological modeling and to provide a brief overview of practical applications in flood prediction and dam operation. Contents: 1. Hydrological modeling: basin concept, processes, and water cycle (MSc. Eng. Mariano Re) 2. Hydrological models: types (lumped, semi-distributed, and distributed) and scales (MSc. Eng. Mariano Re) 3. Regional hydrological modeling and urban water modeling: differences (MSc. Eng. Mariano Re) 4. Application of data assimilation to hydrological modeling for flood forecasting (Dr. Naito Kensuke) 5. Investigation of dam operations for effective flood control and hydro power generation - Introduction of the case study in Japan (Dr. Katsunori Tamakawa) 6. Application of ensemble rainfall prediction into hydrological forecasts (Dr. Tomoki Ushiyama) There will be lectures in Spanish and English. PREVENIR is an international cooperation project between Argentina and Japan, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) under the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) program. The Japan institutions involved in the project are RIKEN Center for Computational Science, the University of Osaka, the International Center for Water Hazards and the Japan Meteorological Agency, and Argentinean institutions are the National Meteorological Service, the National Water Institute and the National Research Council.
