EUMETSAT short course: EUMETSAT MTG-I1 Lightning Imager: background, data and application in thunderstorm detection and forecasting
Start Date:
Sept. 5, 2024
Region:
Africa, Europe
Description:
This short course on MTG-I1 Lightning Imager (LI) is the first in the series of short courses on the MTG data and applications.
LI is the first space-based instrument monitoring lightning occurrence over Europe, Africa and South America from geostationary orbit, with pre-operational level 2 data available to all users through EUMETCast and via the Data Store since 8 July 2024.
The event will start at 07:00 UTC and last about 4 hours. It will offer insight into the theory of lightning discharges and lightning measurements, details on the LI instrument, acquisition of data, filtering, noise removal, processing, LI baseline products and applications. You will also receive preliminary information about the quality and accuracy of LI data against ground-based lightning detection networks, based on real examples.
A practical part will offer a demo on data retrieval from the EUMETSAT Data Store and visualisation using the SIFT software and/or Jupyter Notebooks.
The second part of the course will focus on data applications. You will see recent thunderstorm cases over Europe with LI data “in action”.
Finally, experts from meteorological services will demonstrate how to deal with reception, visualisation and use of LI data in the operational work.
