Short Course - Using EUMETView and Jupyter Notebooks to depict a Dust Event

Dust is one of the key components of atmospheric constituents, influencing air quality, climate, visibility, and human health. Its high spatial and temporal variability makes it difficult to monitor using surface-based observations alone, which is why spaceborne observations are essential to accurately detect, track, and monitor dust plumes across large areas. To address these challenges, EUMETSAT provides a short course showing how its satellite-based tools respond to the current scientific needs for dust detection and visualisation. The session begins with a brief introduction to dust, setting the scene by exploring its environmental relevance and highlighting the role of satellite Earth Observations in detecting, monitoring, and tracking dust transport. Participants will then follow a guided demonstration on how to identify a dust event using EUMETView, EUMETSAT’s user-friendly visualisation service. This exercise will show how to generate a clear image or animation of the selected event. The training continues with an overview of the available Jupyter Notebooks, which can be used to visualise and download Copernicus Sentinel-3 SLSTR Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and C3S (Copernicus Climate Change Service) IASI (MAPIR Algorithm) Dust Optical Depth (DOD). The notebooks will be adapted live during the session, to demonstrate how to reproduce the same event previously identified on EUMETView, showcasing a complete workflow from visual inspection to interactive data analysis.
