Short Course: Introduction to Fire Products - Part 1
Start Date:
March 10, 2026
Description:
This first session of the two-part webinar series builds a foundational understanding of fires, remote sensing principles, and key Earth Observation products to support more advanced analysis in part 2.
The session begins with a brief introduction to fire behaviour and dynamics; setting the scene by exploring the environmental relevance of wildfires, and focusing on the role of satellite observations in fire detection and monitoring. An overview of the main satellite missions and fire-related products will be presented to support this fundamental knowledge.
Participants will then follow a guided demonstration using EUMETView, EUMETSAT’s user-friendly visualisation platform, to identify and explore a real fire event. The demonstration will include:
- Sentinel-3 OLCI RGB imagery to observe smoke plume development and surface features.
- Sentinel-3 SLSTR Fire Radiative Power (FRP) products to detect active fires and assess their intensity.
- MTG Fire Temperature RGB data to illustrate fire intensity.
By combining these datasets, participants will see how different satellite sensors work together to provide a view of fire activity and plume evolution.
The session concludes with a summary of key resources and guidance for further exploration of fire products and visualisation tools.
This first session lays the groundwork for the second, which will move beyond the basics into more advanced fire monitoring, analysis techniques, and practical workflows.
