Earth Sessions by WEkEO - Natural Disasters: Fire hotspots and smoke monitoring with Sentinel-3
Start Date:
Feb. 24, 2026
Description:
As part of these events, the Atmospheric Composition team at EUMETSAT will host two sessions:
Session 1: Fire hotspots and smoke monitoring with Sentinel-3: basic concepts
- Date: 24 February
- Session length: ~20 minutes
- Session type: Theory
This first session provides a theoretical introduction to wildfire activity in Spain and Europe in 2025, setting the environmental context and explaining the role of satellite Earth Observation in detecting and monitoring fires. Participants will be introduced to Copernicus fire-related data products, with a focus on Sentinel-3 Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and Fire Radiative Power (FRP). This session lays the conceptual foundation for the hands-on demonstration that follows.
Session 2: Fire hotspots and smoke monitoring with Sentinel-3: Tutorial
- Date: 26 February
- Session length: ~30 minutes
- Session type: Jupyter Notebook demonstration
The second session is a practical, hands-on demonstration, focused on working with real wildfire data. Using a Jupyter Notebook, participants will follow a step-by-step walk-through, showing how to access, process, and visualise fire-related datasets. The session includes:
- A live demonstration of data access using WekEO HDA through a Jupyter Notebook.
- Practical processing and visualisation of S3 AOD and S3 FRP data through a Jupyter Notebook.
Participants will gain a clear understanding of how the WEkEO platform can be used to support wildfire analysis and monitoring.
