Short Course: Introduction to Fire Products Pt 2 - Intermediate Users

Start Date:
March 31, 2026
Description:
Building on the foundations introduced in the first session (10 March 2026), this second online session is designed as an expert-level course, focusing on more advanced scientific concepts and hands-on data analysis workflows for fire monitoring and impact assessment. The course begins with a deeper theoretical overview of fire processes, atmospheric aerosols, and burned area dynamics. Participants will explore the physical principles behind Fire Radiative Power (FRP), aerosol transport, and post-fire landscape changes. Following the theoretical introduction, the session will move into a series of live demonstrations using Jupyter Notebooks within the WEkEO environment, showcasing practical workflows for accessing, analysing, and visualising Copernicus data. Participants will: - Work with Sentinel-3 FRP data to monitor active fire intensity and temporal evolution. - Explore Sentinel-3 Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) products to assess smoke plume dispersion and atmospheric impacts. - Use a dedicated Sentinel-2 notebook, applying the Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) to map and analyse burned areas after a fire event. Through these guided exercises, attendees will follow a complete workflow from data access to interactive analysis, gaining practical experience with advanced EO tools commonly used in fire science and operational monitoring. This expert course complements the first basic session by moving beyond visualisation into quantitative analysis, enabling participants to better understand fire behaviour, atmospheric effects, and post-fire impacts using satellite data and cloud-based platforms.
