Online International Training on RGB Analysis Technique for Himawari Satellite Data

Start Date:
Oct. 12, 2026
City:
Online
Region:
Asia & Oceania
Description:
The program introduces the scientific foundations of satellite remote sensing, particularly focusing on how multispectral observations from the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) can be transformed into meaningful RGB (Red-Green-Blue) composite products. RGB techniques combine information from multiple spectral channels such as visible, near-infrared, and infrared wavelengths into a single color image, where each color component (red, green, and blue) represents specific physical properties of the atmosphere or Earth's surface. By integrating these channels, RGB composites enhance the visual differentiation of atmospheric phenomena that may not be easily distinguished in single-channel imagery, allowing users to quickly identify cloud types, cloud phase, cloud top temperature, moisture distribution, dust and volcanic ash plumes, smoke, fog, and various surface characteristics. The training also emphasizes interpretation skills — understanding how color signatures correspond to meteorological processes such as deep convection, tropical cyclone development, frontal systems, severe storms, and heavy rainfall potential. In addition, the course highlights the operational application of RGB imagery in weather forecasting and nowcasting, supporting early warning systems, aviation safety, maritime operations, disaster risk reduction, and environmental monitoring.
Targeted Audience:
The training is open to meteorological, climate, hydrological, and related technical personnel from relevant national institutions, agencies and universities involved in weather monitoring, forecasting, satellite meteorology, disaster risk reduction, aviation meteorology, and environmental monitoring, with priority given to participants from National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs)
